BORDERS RAILWAY RE-OPENING:<\/strong>
\nSuccess of the Campaign for Borders Rail gives hope for other stranded communities to rejoin the rail network<\/strong><\/p>\n

Transform Scotland [1] has today (Friday 4th) responded to the imminent re-opening of the Borders Railway from Edinburgh to Tweedbank, just beyond Galashiels, by welcoming this major addition to the Scottish rail network.<\/p>\n

Transform Scotland rail campaigner Paul Tetlaw said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe re-opening of the Borders Railway is a day for real celebration. The line will open up new opportunities for the people of the Borders and encourage others to visit the area and enjoy the many tourist attractions on offer. The campaigners who championed this railway deserve hearty congratulations and others should be encouraged by their success. The next line to re-open could well be to Levenmouth, an area of Fife well deserving to be re-connected to the national network.\u201d<\/em> [2]<\/p>\n

The new Borders Railway has ten stations, including Edinburgh Waverley and Tweedbank, and is the result of the grassroots Campaign for Borders Rail set up in 1999, which would like to see the railway extended to Hawick as the next phase. [3]<\/p>\n

The re-opened railway follows most of the alignment of the northern part of the Waverley Route, a former double-track line in southern Scotland and northern England that ran between Edinburgh and Carlisle. That line was closed in 1969, as part of the Beeching cuts, leaving the Borders region without any access to the National Rail network.<\/p>\n
