Our consultation response<\/a> highlights our full support for extending the tram network in Edinburgh. Doing so will build on the success that the present tram network has had since its introduction and unlock opportunities for Leith, Newhaven and beyond. Among other things, extending the tram will deliver reduced traffic congestion, better connections across the city, cleaner air, and an opportunity to improve the public realm in one of Edinburgh’s most densely populated areas.<\/p>\nOur response draws on previous submissions to City of Edinburgh Council regarding the tram network, and highlights the high levels of support from business, academia and the third sector for the tram project in previous years.<\/p>\n
Commenting on extending the trams to Newhaven, Paul Tetlaw, Policy Forum Convener at Transform Scotland, said:<\/p>\n
“We fully support the Edinburgh Council’s proposals to extend the tram network to Leith and Newhaven. This is a huge opportunity to deliver a world class public transport network in Edinburgh, improve connections across the city, and tackle key problems such as road traffic congestion.<\/em><\/p>\n“This is also a great chance to\u00a0<\/em>improve Edinburgh’s public realm, reduce motor traffic and improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. Indeed, this is normal practice in Continental Europe when introducing tram projects.<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>The earlier stage of tram construction unfortunately did not fully capitalise on these opportunities.
