Transform Scotland rail campaigner Paul Tetlaw reports:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

As a regular traveller on the ECML I noted that the mileage signs erected by the LNER in the 1920s were badly neglected and appeared to be in danger of collapse. These signs are part of the history of the route and add interest to modern day travellers — as well as providing information on distances to Edinburgh and London.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Two of the signs are located in Scotland and so I contacted John Yellowlees of ScotRail to see if Network Rail Scotland could be persuaded to restore the signs. John in turn contacted Andy Savage from the Railway Heritage Trust and Russell Kimber from Network Rail.<\/p>\n

The outcome was that the Railway Heritage Trust agreed to fund the materials for the restoration and a team from Network Rail volunteered to carry out the work in their own time.<\/p>\n

The work was undertaken earlier this year and the two signs in Scotland have now been splendidly restored. The signs mark 50 miles to Edinburgh and 350 miles to London. The attached photo shows the distance to London.<\/p>\n

I was recently pleased to hear that the volunteers from Network Rail had received the Stagecoach Volunteers Award at the National Railway Heritage Awards held in London on 5 December. Russell Kimber and James Howie from Network Rail Scotland collected the award and the team commented that they had done it ‘for the good of the railway’.<\/p>\n
