Commenting on today\u2019s new transport statistics, \u2018Transport and Travel in Scotland\u2019, [1] Transform Scotland director Colin Howden commented:<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s new statistics come as no surprise. We\u2019re paying the price for a decade where the bulk of new capital spending has gone into new trunk roads rather than investing in local transport such as walking, cycling and buses.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite last week\u2019s welcome announcement of \u00a3500m investment in bus services announced as part of the Programme for Government, the Scottish Ministers\u2019 expenditure plans remain grotesquely skewed towards supporting more car use, with \u00a36,000m devoted to just two roads (the A9 and A96 dualling projects).\u201d<\/p>\n

Amongst other things, the new statistics show:<\/p>\n

* Limited progress in increasing cycle use, and a worrying decline in walking.
\n* Further evidence of the decline in bus use.
\n* Increasing single occupant car use (up 10 percentage points over the past 20 years).<\/p>\n

Howden concluded:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no reasons why Scotland shouldn\u2019t be performing better on sustainable transport. Today\u2019s figures show that the majority of all journeys are short in distance, the type of journeys where many more should be being made on foot, by bike and by bus.\u201d [1]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
