The train was converted from a former London Underground D78 electric model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vivarail\u2019s purpose for this demonstration was to highlight the role that batteries must play as we decarbonise the railway network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They note that whilst \u2018electrification is the most logical method of decarbonising the railways\u2019, that installing the overhead wires can be very difficult and expensive. Therefore, using \u2018batteries [is] the logical solution\u2019, because the technology is developed and it allows us to avoid installing a complex network of <a href=\"https:\/\/vivarail.co.uk\/vivarail-battery-trains\/\">wires.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/transform.scot\/blog\/2021\/11\/09\/cop26-a-trip-on-the-vivarail-class-230-battery-emu-train\/\">Paul noted that<\/a>: \u201cit remains to be seen where such converted trains might be appropriate on the Scottish network, but as a demonstration of battery technology it certainly worked\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>#lovemybus and COP26<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/transform.scot\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3078f979-bbf6-44a6-af7d-b4ca409121fe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9730\" src=\"https:\/\/transform.scot\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3078f979-bbf6-44a6-af7d-b4ca409121fe-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/transform.scot\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3078f979-bbf6-44a6-af7d-b4ca409121fe-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/transform.scot\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3078f979-bbf6-44a6-af7d-b4ca409121fe.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>In the lead up to COP26 our #lovemybus team launched a video to accompany a blog written in support of the campaign by Transport Secretary Graeme Dey. <a href=\"https:\/\/lovemybus.scot\/blog\/guest-blog-minister-for-transport-graeme-dey\/\">Dey\u2019s blog<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0touched on the important role that bus must play in our transition to a zero emission society. He said:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBuses can be our greatest ally in our just transition to net zero \u2013 delivering on a range of outcomes ranging from environmental to economic, from social equality and to improved health outcomes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dey\u2019s blog, alongside the fantastic <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/639903414\">video<\/a> produced by our Transform Creative team, paved the way for a successful COP for #lovemybus in Glasgow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the two weeks, the team were situated at First Bus Caledonian Depot, engaging with visitors to the depot about the important role of bus in creating a better future for all. Starting in Kelvingrove Park, they joined the thousands of people, moving their way through the streets of Glasgow, demanding more to be done to curb our global emissions and strive for a better future.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>LNER and Transform Scotland team up to host an event in the National Museum for Scotland\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On 10 November, we teamed up with LNER to host an event in Edinburgh to discuss recent research undertaken by transport experts Steer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/transform.scot\/blog\/2021\/11\/10\/new-research-shows-government-action-needed-to-shift-anglo-scottish-travel-from-air-to-rail\/\">Their research found<\/a> that taking the train is faster, cheaper, and more reliable than plane or car for Edinburgh-London journeys, but that there is a mismatch between people\u2019s perception of rail travel, and this reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Commenting on these findings, Transform\u2019s director Colin Howden said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s well known that the train is better than the plane for protecting the climate, but much work is still required to communicate the price, speed and reliability benefits of rail over air for Anglo-Scottish trips.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPart of that job is for the rail industry itself. But we also need to see action from the Scottish Government in shifting domestic travel from air to rail. Its new aviation strategy proposals actually encourage an increase in domestic flights and fail to capitalise on the shift towards rail travel that is already underway for routes between central Scotland and London.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We will be addressing this mismatch in the coming weeks and months as we work closely with our rail partners to get the message out to the public to #chooserail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Transform Scotland\u2019s Communications Officer, Rachel McFarlane, reports on a selection of our recent campaign activities.
